Data: Can’t Live With It, Can’t Live Without It!
Big data, curb management, occupancy, space counts, etc. – all need data and it must be accurate. What are some of the things to consider when going about finding the data you need to solve a problem, predict future needs, or simply run a more efficient operation? From a procurement standpoint, here are a few items to consider.
- What am I trying to solve? Too many times, we have seen some great apps or platforms that are cool to look at but really seem to be a technology looking for a problem. Make sure you know what it is you’re trying to do before undertaking the task of finding an answer.
- Do I want a specific product or am I looking at an overall solution? Both questions can lead to a myriad of confusion. Some specialty platforms claim to have exactly what you need, while others who are competent elsewhere will tell you they can do it, “no problem.” Except that it is a problem- yours!
- Be careful of the “fake it till we make it crowd.” Similar to the above, it is a matter of overpromising and underdelivering. Ask for references, and be specific in what you need. It is not as important where the technology is in play as it is where is it working. Don’t be a test site unless you fully understand that before going in.
By doing a little research on problem definition, available working technologies, and setting proper expectations, your technology journey will be as fun as it is rewarding! Curious to know your thoughts.
