“One innovation that I am seeing an increasing interest in is the adoption of flexible booking and sharing systems for parking spaces. This trend has been accelerated by the rise of hybrid working and remote working, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. These systems enable users to book parking spaces online or via mobile apps, with flexible hours and payment options catering to individual needs and schedules. Rates can be set based on demand to encourage and balance demand throughout a given week. With fewer people commuting to offices or campuses regularly, shared parking optimizes the use of parking spots, while minimizing the environmental impact of transportation. These strategies encourage sustainable mobility choices and can make cities more livable.”

“Fast charging using a solar array is the next step - and it’s available now. Fast charging is necessary so that drivers can go about their business quickly. For example, a typical vehicle can travel up to 100 miles with a 9-minute charge. Using the sun instead of the electric grid is necessary and timely. Connection to the grid is not only expensive, it does not provide a fully reliable supply of energy due to the increasing demand on the grid, interruptions in service and price variability. Using the sun and cutting Co2 omissions is another big benefit.”

“Digitalization and automation of every human interaction is driving innovation in the parking and mobility industry today. But these are only incremental innovations on previous generations of technologies. After a very long time, we are seeing a big disruptor for the technology world emerging on the horizon, that is the “Generative AI.” This would give rise to a class of systems that are not programmed, but they learn from the data, and “self-produce.” With all the buzz around ChatGPT, we are only seeing the tip of that iceberg. Fast forward two to five years, we would see a completely new class of digital systems that would be self-learning, self-operating, self-correcting, and self-evolving, in essence “self-generating digital systems.” That is where lies the future of technology, and that of parking and mobility.”

“I am most excited about the continued advancements and system innovations around connected vehicles and smart communication technology to offer greater mobility efficiency and improved user safety. Connected real-time information regarding available destination parking options, the networked connections with the infrastructure we travel through, and the transportation performances gained will continue to evolve, enhance, and ultimately move our entire industry forward through these new technology advancements.”

Innovative and flexible ways to achieve compliance are going to have a significant impact on how our industry is perceived over the next five to ten years. It is encouraging and exciting to see recent examples of flexible policies like opportunities for customers to pay their parking fees instead of a citation, as well as reduced fines and dynamic pricing policies.”
